Job Description 
Affinity Energy is looking for a professional to fill an entry level position (Level I) or a professional with 2 to 5 years control systems experience to fill a junior control system integrator (Level II) position within our rapidly growing mission critical team. As a Control System Integrator, I or II, you will have direct responsibility for executing both in-house and on-site tasks as part of our mission critical projects. In-house tasks can include: 
  • Preparation of design submittals or system documentation. 
  • Development of data acquisition data bases and OPC interfaces. 
  • Creation of human machine interfaces. 
 
On-Site tasks can include: 
  • Installation and commissioning support. 
  • Assisting with customer training. 
  • Troubleshooting networks, instruments, and controls. 
 
As a member of our mission critical team, you will receive the following types of training: 
  • Formal training with Trihedral VTSCADA or Inductive Automation Ignition. 
  • Optional Training with Schneider Electric power monitoring expert. 
  • Fundamentals of emergency power supply systems for data centers and central energy plants. 
  • Fundamentals of piping and instrumentation diagrams for chilled water, steam, and fuel oil system within central energy plants. 
 
The following are examples of the types of customers and projects that you may get involved with: 
  • Electrical power management system within a state-of-the-art data center at one of the most technologically advanced stadiums in the NFL. 
  • Electrical distribution power management system at the longest bridge and tunnel system in the United States. 
  • SCADA system for a data center that will be a cable landing station for one of the longest undersea cables in the world. 
  • SCADA systems at the largest healthcare and largest bank in Charlotte, NC. 
 
Required Skills: 
  • General knowledge of electrical theory and equipment, computer logic, programmingand computer networking. 
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem solving. 
  • Experience with structured programming language and/or embedded programming. 
  • Professional and organized with strong communication skills. 
  • Excellent customer service. 
  • Energetic attitude and desire to learn new skills and technologies. 
 
Plusses: 
  • PLC or SCADA experience. 
  • Electrical distribution systems experience.

ENGINEER I OR ENGINEER II

This engineering position is within the Distributed Generation (DG) Engineering team as part of the Distributed Energy Group (DEG). The DG Engineering Team supports the integration of renewable energy in the distribution grid by ensuring technical and regulatory compliance of Independent Power Producers (IPPs).
 
This Engineer I/II role will be responsible for performing DG interconnection studies, refining DG interconnection study processes, and recommending and implementing improvement initiatives. The candidate needs to have a technical background and be comfortable working in an agile, fast-paced, technical environment.
 
The Engineer I position is the entry level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees in the Engineer I position solve problems in engineering areas of specialization with close supervision. An Engineer I is expected to develop skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. An Engineer I has knowledge of fundamental concepts and procedures.
 
Responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Provide technical expertise and support for all DG projects and studies.
  • Collaborate with the DG Lead Engineers, Senior Engineers, and Study Engineering team to deliver technical support to project owners throughout the process of evaluating the DG project interconnection.
  • Perform DG studies and review studies done by other staff regarding specific jurisdictional requirements for effective interconnection to the grid.
  • Ensure adherence to interconnection standards and utility best practices across multiple jurisdictional areas.
  • Provide subject matter expertise for customer operations and other functional areas. Have a knowledge of the business process, system functionality and database tables, data analytics, and workgroup metrics.
  • Actively participate in special assignments, including representing the DG team for DG-related issues among other organizations within Duke Energy.
 
Basic/Required Qualifications
Note: This posting is for one open position. Dependent on relevant experience, the level to which a candidate is aligned is outlined below.
 
Engineer I:
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program
  • A Master’s degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. Engineering degree

Engineer II:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program
  • A Master’s degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. Engineering degree
  • Minimum of two (2) years of engineering experience
 
Desired Qualifications
  • Minimum of one (1) year of engineering experience
  • Experience in the utility industry
  • Knowledge of distribution system electrical design, operation and reliability
  • Experience with Distributed Energy Resources (DER)
  • Knowledge of inverter based generation and an understanding of protective relays, reclosers and application of distribution protective devices
  • Experience with reading and evaluating electrical one-line diagrams (OLD)
  • Familiarity with DER interconnection policies and procedures
  • Understanding of basic principles of Power Engineering and Power System Analysis
  • Knowledge of distribution system study tools and technologies

Post-Grad Assignments in Transmission & Distribution Infrastructure Research Area

EPRI

The EPRI Transmission and Distribution Infrastructure (TDI) Team would like to engage baccalaureate, master’s, and doctoral degree candidates in annual contracts to support ongoing research, demonstration and deployments. The TDI research portfolio includes asset analytics, asset management, overhead and underground lines, substations, cyber security and information communication technology.

The EPRI program is open to candidates with US citizenship and residency. An annual contract will be put in place with an option to extend for a further year. The contracts include benefits and renumeration is dependent on qualification level. The duration of the employment is one year with a possible extension being offered at the end of the term. Candidates with engineering, science and analytics degrees are preferred.

EPRI research is addressing numerous industry issues including, wildfire detection and mitigation, aging of T&D assets, monitoring of T&D assets, undergrounding, resiliency, and electromagnetic threats to mention a few. More information can be obtained from www.epri.com.
