Electrical Engineer I:
  • Provide necessary skills for the effective performance of the activities of the position.
  • Make recommendations for changes needed to improve the operations of EnergyUnited related to engineering.
  • Coordinate & cooperate with other personnel in performing assigned responsibilities.
  • Observe all Safety Rules, work rules and Regulations adopted by the Cooperative.
  • Assist the Manager of System Engineering in planning and implementation of departmental and company objectives
  • Review and conduct research on equipment and materials, the system design and changing system requirements, taking into consideration reliability, cost and best correct engineering practices including long-range system studies, 4-year construction work plans, sectionalizing studies, capacitor studies, and loss analysis
  • Become knowledgeable of RUS engineering related bulletins and regulations, Cooperative policies and Service Rules and Regulations.
  • Become proficient in designing transmission, substation, distribution, and other facilities that affect the performance of the electric system.
  • Provide guidance and assist Distribution Designers on methods of supply to Developments and Complex Loads to factor cost, reliability, operations, and safety.
  • Analyze reliability of electrical system and recommends remedial action as required for such problems as frequent outage or blinks, low voltage, etc.
  • Maintain uptodate specifications of electric materials and equipment required for the reliable operation of the electric system.
  • Become knowledgeable of the operation and control of the SCADA and Energy Management Systems.
  • Become knowledgeable of the cooperative’s data sources and structures and develop reports as needed to achieve Engineering objectives.
  • Become knowledgeable of the Distribution Automation Systems and Automated Metering Infrastructure Systems of the Cooperative.
  • Become knowledgeable of the Interconnection policies of the Cooperative, including the impact of Distributed Generation Sources on the system.
  • Become knowledgeable in the operations of the Dispatch Center and provide dispatch support during major storms or as needed. Become knowledgeable of the Outage Management System.
  • Be responsible for meeting customer and member needs related to power quality such as stray voltage, large motor starting, harmonic distortion and flicker/blinks.
  • Assist different groups in the development of Metrics for the company.
  • Attend conferences and schools as requested by the Manager of System Engineering.
  • Maintain professional development to include obtaining Fundamentals of Engineering Certification and preparation for Professional Engineer registration.

Electrical Engineer II
  • All the above plus the elevated responsibilities of:
  • Assisting the Dispatch Center and provide dispatch support during major storms or as needed. Maintain knowledgeable of the Outage Management System.
  • Must maintain up to date knowledge of RUS engineering related bulletins and regulations, Cooperative policies and Service Rules and Regulations.
  • May take on the additional responsibilities of:
  • Maintaining proficiency in the design and operation of the Distribution Automation Systems and Automated Metering Infrastructure Systems of the Cooperative.
  • Designing and maintaining the Interconnection policies of the Cooperative, including the impact of Distributed Generation Sources on the system.
  • Other duties relating to the position as assigned.
 
Electrical Engineer III
  • All the above plus the elevated responsibilities of:
  • The ability to take a lead role on teams as assigned by the Cooperative.
  • Taking a lead role in the designing of transmission, substation, distribution, and other facilities that affect the performance of the electric system.
  • May take on the additional responsibilities of:
  • Strong knowledge in the design and operation of the Distribution Automation Systems and Automated Metering Infrastructure Systems of the Cooperative.

To be Considered for the Position, you should have:

  • A Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited institution in electrical engineering or equivalent (required).
  • Entry level to highly experienced (Electrical Engineer I, II or III – Level to be determined by experience) Prior experience is preferred. A PE license in the State of North Carolina is desirable.
  • Availability to be on-call when needed and willing to report to different offices periodically.
  • Experience in the planning and operations of an electrical distribution system and knowledge of the operation of power systems is highly desirable
  • Strong knowledge of computer operations relating to file management, engineering data processes, software, and hardware interfaces
  • The ability to be proficient in running, changing, storing, and managing various system planning cases and scenarios while utilizing different engineering analysis tools
  • A good understanding of electrical engineering fundamentals and knowledge of the National Electric Safety Code and RUS standards is desired
  • A positive, open mind and have a considerate attitude toward the responsibilities of the position

Position Overview

Plan, direct, and coordinate activities of projects to ensure that goals or objectives of projects are accomplished within time and funding parameters. Establish, track, and adhere to tasks, timelines, and budgets. Coordinate project logistics and resources. Research, summarize and write project reports. At Level III, the Project Manager is expected to independently manage larger and more complex projects and may serve as a lead and/or mentor to other staff; individual possesses subject matter expertise in assigned business area. Energy industry experience a plus (e.g., solar, electric transportation, energy efficiency, residential and/or commercial building systems, etc.).

 

Essential Functions

Project Management

  • Develop and refine scope of work taking into account the client's needs, budget and other resources.
  • Develop and implement project plans, including strategies, milestones and tasks.
  • Design and facilitate project meetings and record minutes and action plans.
  • Coordinate project logistics including meetings, conference calls, presentations, workshops, client visits, travel, and events associated with assigned projects.
  • Work with internal team and customer to define and update AE's role on projects.
  • Establish, document, track, and adhere to project timelines, budgets, and tasks.

Position Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in business management or relevant field and 4-6 years of previous experience in managing projects is required. An equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience may be considered.
  • PMP Certification is desired; the ability to become certified is required.
  • Proficient skills in Microsoft Office Products are required; experience using project management software applications is preferred.
  • Project planning, time management, communication, writing and research skills are required. Ability to problem solve, analyze and interpret data. Ability to work in teams as well as independently. Must be detail oriented and organized.
  • Individual must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, as well as a commitment to providing exceptional customer service, both internally and externally. 
  • Knowledge of relevant industries is a plus; power utility programs including residential, commercial and industrial, electric transportation.
  • Knowledge of energy efficiency or renewable energy is preferred
 

Physical Demands/Work Conditions

This job requires the individual to work indoors in a normal office environment. The duties and responsibilities of this position may include the ability to remain in a stationary position for most of the time. The individual will operate the computer, printer and other office equipment to perform the job and may need to occasionally move about inside the office to access files and other office machinery. The individual will spend an extended number of hours in front of a computer screen and will frequently interact and communicate with internal and external customers. 

Must be able to exchange accurate information and express oneself in an appropriate manner. The job may require occasional lifting or moving of boxes or objects weighing up to 25 lbs. In this role, the person will hold a valid NC driver's license and travel 15-20% of the time. The individual may frequently create documents or other organizational collateral and serve as the liaison between the organization and its customers/clients.

Position Overview

Advanced Energy provides independent engineering services mainly for utility scale distributed energy resources. We are seeking a candidate who is passionate about quality and ensuring the safety and reliability of distributed energy resources that are connected to the utility grid.

 

The ideal candidate will have seven to nine years of experience in electrical engineering and possess:

  • Knowledge of design, construction, and commissioning of distributed energy facilities including utility scale PV, medium voltage distribution construction, electrical transmission and/or distribution systems, energy storage systems, and/or National Electrical Code
  • Experience performing engineering analysis, design documentation review, and/or field testing for electrical systems
  • Ability to perform field evaluations to assess aspects of the quality of design, construction, and operation; ability to conduct field tests of electrical equipment
  • Experience presenting concise results to customers through reports that delineate observations, results, and recommendations for further action
  • Strong commitment to safety and attention to detail

It is preferred that candidates have a PE and/or other certifications relevant to job duties.

The job requires team members to spend part of their time visiting utility scale distributed energy resource facilities in North Carolina and South Carolina. Daytime travel typically 1-3 days a week, overnight travel only sometimes necessary. The rest of the time is balanced between the main office and/or working remotely at a home office.

Engineering Support

  • Conduct facility reviews and studies or site assessments to locate opportunities for improvements in productivity, quality and efficiency.
  • Assess aspects of the quality of design, construction, and operation for energy technologies according to a defined standard; May have input on standard development.
  • Perform quality control, recommend solutions, define and interpret the importance of the implementation of corrective measures.

Provides basic engineering services in the energy field to utilities, industrial customers, commercial customers, institutions, federal and state agencies, and other customers. The Motors and Drives Co-Op position is entry level and requires proficient skills in areas that use engineering judgement. Work products or processes will always have oversight from engineer or field technologist.
 
Essential Functions
 
Engineering Support
· Provide hands on assistance in laboratory setting utilizing various hand tools and power tools.
· Support product testing and safely operate laboratory dynamometers.
· Schedule laboratory testing based on incoming shipments and coordinate outgoing shipments including proper packaging.
· Support facility reviews and studies or site assessments to locate opportunities for improvements in productivity, quality and efficiency.
· Adjust desk heights and rearrange office furniture.
· Support quality control, recommend solutions, define and interpret the importance of the implementation of corrective measures.
· Support design reviews including load calculations, energy performance analysis or design documentation.
· Provide hands on assistance in deploying new technologies in the field.
· Assist in coordinating applied research studies on a national basis, consulting with other organizations and experts.
· Acquire data from field/lab instruments and process into useful information.
 
Technical Expertise
· Recommend improved procedures such as workflow, testing/calibration procedures, etc.
· Develop expertise through targeted development activities and new job experiences.
· Oral communication with external clients during laboratory witness testing.
· Exercise problem solving skills and take on new learning while working with customers and other industry professionals.
 
Project Management
· Participate on project teams.
· Adhere to project scope, timeline and budget.
· Coordinate projects or tasks, making detailed plans to accomplish goals and coordinating the integration of technical activities.
Requirements
· Working toward bachelor’s degree in engineering or relevant technical field is required.
· Work experience in an industrial setting is preferred.
· Proficient level of Microsoft Office Products is preferred.
· Problem solving/data interpretation skills; strong oral communication skills; ability to work in teams as well as independently; organization skills and attention to detail; ability to adhere to project budget; commitment to excellent customer service.
 
Physical Demands/Work Conditions
Must be able to work in industrial environments (plants and labs) or construction sites to include climbing ladders, lifting up to 30 pounds comfortably and following safety. Must be able to work in excessive hot or cold temperatures. Position could require exposure to the elements and wearing personal protective equipment.

Post-Grad Assignments in Transmission & Distribution Infrastructure Research Area

EPRI

 
The EPRI Transmission and Distribution Infrastructure (TDI) Team would like to engage baccalaureate, master’s, and doctoral degree candidates in annual contracts to support ongoing research, demonstration and deployments. The TDI research portfolio includes asset analytics, asset management, overhead and underground lines, substations, cyber security and information communication technology.

The EPRI program is open to candidates with US citizenship and residency. An annual contract will be put in place with an option to extend for a further year. The contracts include benefits and renumeration is dependent on qualification level. The duration of the employment is one year with a possible extension being offered at the end of the term. Candidates with engineering, science and analytics degrees are preferred.

EPRI research is addressing numerous industry issues including, wildfire detection and mitigation, aging of T&D assets, monitoring of T&D assets, undergrounding, resiliency, and electromagnetic threats to mention a few. More information can be obtained from www.epri.com.
