Biography

Dr. Tiefu Zhao has been an Associate Professor since 2022, and Assistant Professor at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte since 2016. From 2010 to 2016, he was with Eaton Corporation Research & Technology, Milwaukee, WI. He has extensive academic and industry R&D experience in power electronics and power management areas. His current research interests include solid state transformer, solid state circuit protection, wireless power transfer, wide bandgap device based power conversion, power electronics reliability and fault detection. Dr. Zhao received the B.S. and M.S. degrees from Tsinghua University and the Ph.D. degree from North Carolina State University, all in electrical engineering. His Ph.D. research topic was named the world’s top 10 emerging technologies by MIT technology review 2011. He was the recipient of the 2015 IAS Andrew W. Smith Outstanding Young Member Award and 2015 STEM Forward Young Engineer of the Year Award. He has served as an Associate Editor for the IEEE Journal of Emerging and Selected Topics in Power Electronics (JESTPE). He is the Founding Chair of IEEE Charlotte section PELS/IAS/IES Chapter.
