Research Engineer – Energy Engineering Specialist
The Research Engineer – Energy Specialist will play a key role in optimizing energy performance and reducing operational costs across multiple healthcare facilities. The role works independently to analyze energy data, conduct energy audits, and develop strategies for improving energy efficiency. This position in building controls systems and energy data analysis will be crucial in identifying and implementing energy-saving solutions.
The position’s key responsibilities include:
- Collecting and analyzing utility and operational data from healthcare facilities to identify patterns in energy consumption and areas of inefficiency. Perform detailed analyses and provide actionable recommendations for energy conservation.
- Leading on-site energy audits (ASHRAE Level I & II), assisting in data logging, conducting equipment inventories, and documenting building control systems and using audit findings to propose energy-saving measures.
- Lead the analysis and review of building automation system (BAS) data and sequences of operation. Identify opportunities for optimization and energy performance improvements. Make informed recommendations based on a comprehensive understanding of building controls.
- Independently prepare detailed technical reports on energy performance and optimization recommendations. Submit monthly status reports that meet the standards of experienced subject matter experts, providing clear and actionable insights for facility managers.
Minimum Experience / Education: Candidates must have a master’s degree and relevant work experience.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:
- Demonstrated experience in energy engineering with a strong focus on building controls
- Expertise in building automation systems (BAS), energy auditing (ASHRAE Level I & II), and energy data analysis
- Communication: Ability to independently develop technical reports and lead discussions with subject matter experts
- Travel: Position requires travel to multiple facilities across the country

Assistant or Associate Professor – modern power systems
The Energy Production and Infrastructure Center (EPIC) and the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering (ECE) in the William States Lee College of Engineering at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (Charlotte) are pleased to invite applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level. The successful applicant will have experience in the realm of modern power systems. The ideal candidate will have expertise in protective relaying and/or operational technology (OT) integration, integration of AI, and cybersecurity for modern power systems.
This faculty member will leverage EPIC’s existing state-of-the-art test facilities, including multiple real-time simulators and advanced operational-technology testbeds within the Duke Energy Smart Grid Laboratory. The candidate is expected to develop a funded research program that complements and supports the multidisciplinary, power and transformational energy-focused research efforts within EPIC.
Key characteristics for a successful candidate include excellent verbal and written communication skills and a willingness to contribute to a collaborative team of tenured faculty, research faculty, research staff, and students. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering or an equivalent field and must be effective teachers at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
