M.S.E.M with Energy Analytics Concentration

Students can earn an M.S. in Engineering Management with a concentration in Energy Analytics. While traditional power and energy education focuses on the engineering aspect of energy systems, today’s energy industry is facing fierce competitions in the data science field. The MSEM Energy Analytics concentration prepares the students for the data science career in the energy industry, so that the graduates can make informed decisions by extracting actionable insights from data. After completing the required core MSEM courses (10 credit hours), an additional 12 credits are required for the concentration: Select two of the following:

  • EMGT 5961 – Introduction to Energy Systems (3)
  • EMGT 5962 – Energy Markets (3)
  • EMGT 5963 – Energy Systems Planning (3)

Plus select two of the following:

  • EMGT 5964 – Case Studies in the Energy Industry (3)
  • EMGT 6910 – Forecasting Techniques, Methodologies, and Practice (3)
  • EMGT 6965 – Energy Analytics (3)

For more information, contact Dr. Tao Hong at Tao.Hong@charlotte.edu or see MS in Engineering Management website.

M.B.A. with Energy Concentration

The Energy Concentration gives students an opportunity to enhance the general M.B.A., which may provide another competitive advantage in the workplace. A cooperative effort between the Belk College of Business and The William States Lee College of Engineering, the program is thought to be the first MBA in the country focused on the power industry. Students will enroll in the MBA and then take 12 credit hours in specialized courses to earn the concentration.

Required Course(s)

  • EMGT 5961 – Introduction to Energy Systems (3)
  • MBAD 6962 – Energy Markets (3)

M.S. in Applied Energy and Electromechanical Engineering

The M.S. in Applied Energy and Electromechanical Engineering (AEEE) degree provides an opportunity for discipline-specific and multidisciplinary graduate level education. Advanced coursework and research are used to enhance professional development, improve technical competency, and initiate a lifelong learning experience. Full-time students typically take three semesters to complete the program. The AEEE degree is a 30-hour Engineering program. (The program is in an approved STEM field that allows international graduates to apply for OPT extension). The program will consist of a 6 credit-hour core, a 3 credit-hour Mathematics Requirement, and 21 credit-hours of additional work based on three options:

  • Option A: Thesis
    • 15 credit-hours of electives, 6 credit-hours of research, successful completion of a thesis and oral defense
  • Option B: Project (non-thesis)
    • 18 credit-hours of electives, 3 credit-hours of individualized project work concluding in a paper and presentation
  • Option C: Comprehensive Exam
    • 21 credit-hours of electives, and passing of a comprehensive exam

For more information see the M.S. in Applied Energy and Electromechanical Engineering website or contact the Program Director, Dr. Aidan Browne.

Graduate Certificate in Applied Energy

The Graduate Certificate in Applied Energy provides graduate students and professionals with the opportunity to reach a demonstrated level of competence in applied energy. Each course in this certificate is applicable toward either the M.S. in Applied Energy and Electromechanical Engineering or the M.S. in Construction and Facilities Engineering degree requirements. The graduate certificate may act as a standalone graduate option for post-baccalaureate students, or may be pursued concurrently with the M.S. in Applied Energy and Electromechanical Systems or the M.S. in Construction and Facilities Engineering degree program at UNC Charlotte. The certificate is awarded upon completion of four graduate level courses (12 credit hours) in the area of applied energy. Requests for other energy-related course substitutions may be approved at the discretion of the department graduate director. Select four of the following:
