EPIC Scholars

The EPIC Scholars Program is a professional development program aiming to develop and improve engineering students’ skills that are imperative for success in today’s work environment, such as communication, teambuilding, leadership, and problem solving. This competitive program will take a cohort of engineering students and work with them throughout the academic year on improving these skills and increase their understanding of the energy industry through monthly career-building sessions.  Students will engage with industry partners throughout this experience and during their end-of-program culminating reception. A $500 scholarship will be awarded to each student upon successful completion of the program!

Eligibility: All UNC Charlotte College of Engineering undergraduate students that are enrolled in an energy concentration or have the intent to enroll once eligible (depending on department criteria). Computer Engineering students are eligible without being enrolled in an energy concertation. Application deadline is Friday, September 12, 2025.

Requirements: Students that are selected to participate in the program must complete the following Professional Development Series and Career-Building Session Requirements.

  • Professional Development Series: Students must participate in the six modules described in the image below.  Each module includes the following:
  • One in-person meeting per module with your fellow students
    • Where: EPIC 2222
    • When: Every 3rd Thursday of the month, 11:30-12:45.
  • Some out-of-classroom activities focused on professional development.  Examples include:
    • Canvas modules on interview skills 
    • Myers Briggs personality test
    • Networking 101
  • Career-Building Sessions: Students must participate in three career-building panel sessions held on Thursdays between October and April.
    • Where: EPIC 2222
    • When: Every 2nd Thursday of the month, 11:30-12:45
    • Topics include the following:
      • Opportunities in Nuclear Power
      • Opportunities in Operating the Modern Power Grid
      • Opportunities for Transmission Line Design & Construction
      • Opportunities in Grid Tech Manufacturing 
      • Opportunities for Communications & Computer Engineering 
      • Opportunities in Utility Asset Management 
      • Benefits of the Energy Concentration

To apply for the program please complete the application form, upload your resume, a short (up to 1 minute) video introducing yourself and expressing why you would like to participate in the program, and complete the short writing sample requested in the application. Application deadline is Friday, September 12, 2025.
